Experts have warned that the number of people who are experiencing cognitive declines (that are associated with the aging process) might reach epidemic proportions by the year 2040 – and as many as eighty million people or more may be affected globally....... But the good news is that research has indicated 2 promising avenues for improving brain functioning.

In an edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, research scientists studied the relationship between receiving instruction in specific thinking skills and long-term thinking abilities. The fifteen million dollar study was funded in part at least by the National Institute of Aging, and observed the effects of sixty minute classes with exercises in speed identification, memory training and reasoning on alomost three thousand Americans, with a median age of 73. After only 10 education sessions, the scientists discovered that the benefits extended for as many as 5 years! Some of the group received new lessons throughout the course, and the correlation between improved brain function and this group was even higher, somewhat surprisingly........

In yet another study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, it was discovered that exercise lead to increased cerebral blood flow, which could lead to better cognitive functioning. Based upon tests where mice actually grew new brain cells as a result of an increased volume of blood to the brain, they studied the effects of exercise on the human brain, paying particular attention to part of the hippocampus, the area of the brain associated with age-related declines in cognition. Based upon these very positive findings, it is hoped that they will ultimately find the right mix of exercises which will aid them in treating memory loss & prevent any further memory degradation.

According to these studies, it certainly seems to pay to exercise not only your body, but also your brain, for a healthier and longer life.
